The Evolution of Dentures into Dental Implants

Have you lost a few teeth through accident, injury or decay, but you haven’t yet enquired about replacement teeth? Is this because you are put off by the thought of traditional dentures? If that’s the case, you are not alone.
There are lots of problems associated with traditional dentures that cause people to delay seeking replacement teeth. Many people are putting up with unclear speech and uncomfortable chewing motions when they eat food simply because they perceive replacement teeth to be more embarrassing than the gap they currently have.

Replacement teeth have come a long way in the last few years. These days dentists at our Maidstone dental practice will fit dental implants instead of traditional dentures and save you the frustration of dealing with prosthetic teeth that have a tendency to fall out of the mouth or shift about. Dental implants are very secure and have been known to last up to 30 years. You don’t have to remove them and they look just like natural teeth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are individual replacement teeth, that consist of a titanium root and a ceramic crown. The root is placed into the gum and the gum is then left to heal before the permanent crown is added to the top. This artificial root will stimulate the jawbone in the same way that a natural tooth will, and in this way, prevent atrophy of the bone here.

It may seem logical that to replace an entire row of teeth, individual dental implants are needed. However, crowns attached to a bridge can be secured with a dental implant at either end, Removing the need for more invasive treatment. An entire mouth of replacement teeth can be anchored to just four to six dental implants.

Once fitted and healed, dental implants should look and feel like your original teeth. They will help you distribute your biting and chewing motions in a more balanced way, making eating food more comfortable and they’re easy to keep clean too.

With dental implants, you can smile with confidence, knowing that your teeth look great and aren’t about to fall out. Here at the Roseacre Dental Practice in Maidstone, our experienced dentists have been fitting dental implants for many years.
